We accomplished our goal of getting the MRI done today! His C-Collar was removed by the trauma surgeon; he only had minor strains in his neck. Planning on jaw surgery on Sunday, and his tracheostomy and G-tube will be placed sometime Friday or Saturday. The Neurointesivist confirmed the diagnosis of DAI from the MRI. (DAI is the tearing of axon fibers that are responsible for communicating with the neurons – which are responsible for telling the body what to do on command) he has very small signs of the tearing of neurons in the top, middle, and bottom of the brain which includes a small bleed on the brainstem making it a “Grade 3”. The doctor did not have much more of an update from yesterday… these findings did not change his hopefulness, and stated they are “favorable” for recovery, but because there is brainstem involvement, we will not know the extent until they start to wake him up and request him to follow commands. This long process of sedation weaning will begin today.
Tracheostomy and G tube placed today! He looks so much more comfortable. So good to see his face free of tubes.
